Welcome to the 2018-2019 School Year! I look forward to working with you and your student.
We will use EL Education for Grade 5 for Literacy Instruction
Please be aware that there may be some sensitive content that we will be working with this school year. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
There will NOT be any daily Literacy Homework. As we progress into the school year and the children are more comfortable with the curriculum, I will assign parts of the performance task to be completed at home. It will require technology. If that is ever an issue, please let me know. I will make adjustments immediately.
When possible, please encourage your child to read 15-20 minutes of free choice reading in the evening.
120 Minutes of Literacy Instruction everyday!
60 minutes Module Lesson ( There will be 6 formal assessments during each Module/Quarter)
60 minutes ALL block- ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE AND LITERACY BLOCK
-5 components
(Students will rotate through the 5 components) We will complete 3 components each day. 20 min for each component. Students will have opportunities to work independently, pairs, groups and will meet with teacher in a small-group setting each day.

What are human rights, and how can they be threatened?
Human rights belong to everyone, but they can look different to different people in different places.
We can better understand how human rights can be threatened by reading about the experi- ences of fictional characters in stories.
How can we use writing to raise awareness of human rights?
We can raise awareness of human rights issues by writing about the issues fictional characters face.

Performance Task Project -Due at the end of the Quarter. MONOLOGUE-An oral presentation. Student will write and perform a monologue based on a character's reaction to an event in Esperanza Rising where a human right was violated or threatened.

Athletes are presented with unique opportunities to lead change.

Natural disasters can devastate people and places.
A narrator’s or speaker’s point of view influences how events in a literary text are described.
Visual elements in literature contribute to the meaning, tone, and beauty of the text
.
How can we prepare for a natural disaster?
We can prepare for a natural disaster by learning about what to do in the event of a natural disaster and preparing an emergency preparedness kit.
Each Module consists of 3 units (2-3 weeks long)

- 1 pack of different colored highlighters

- 3 boxes of tissues (these may need to be replenished)
- The following books will be used in Literacy. We have a class set that stays in the classroom. It would be beneficial to have a personal copy, but it is not mandatory:
